How to get rid of a cough?

I had a bad cold about 4 or 5 weeks ago, and I'm still coughing with an itchy/tickly cough. Bought some tickly cough syrup that works for a while then the phlegm comes back. Please, I really need to get rid of it as I'm a vocalist and it's ruining my singing :(
