Stand up mixer vs. handheld mixer... does it matter which I use?

I making a double layered cake. (one layer carrot; the other zucchini). The instructions say I should use a stand up mixer with the paddle attachment to combine the ingredients. Will it make a big difference if I use a handheld mixer instead or is there a reason why the paddle attachment is required?
