What is the driving force for diffusion of gases across the plasma membrane of a cell?

It is the concentration of gas. Because the lungs/aveoli are rich in oxygen, and blood cells are depleted of oxygen, the gas will go from areas of high concentration to low concentration by pive diffusion.
