He is only asking about you because he ran into a friend of yours and you are something they have in common, nothing more,you were just a conversation piece, that's it! I think if he was being hurtful was to push you away because you weren't getting any of the other hints that he was sending you like not calling you for several days etc... He got fed up & did the tough love thing to you. The fact that he stated that he was glad you are becoming independent, tells me you must have been clingy, even though he was away at school,you probably called and text him non-stop. You do you now and get on with out him.
