My transmission just stopped shifting to overdrive.?

I was driving about 100 miles and in the last ten, the engine over heated and the transmission stopped shifting to overdrive. This car was sitting for six months but started regularly. I'm going to flush the radiator for the over heating. But is there anything I can do for the short of replacing it.?
